By the 1920s the "age/area" concept had become established as a way of organizing European prehistory. A basic principle of the "age/area" concept is that prehistory can be usefully organized on the basis of technology, and most scholars recognize at least five major "ages": the Paleolithic (literally, the Old Stone Age), the Mesolithic (or Middle Stone Age), the Neolithic (or New Stone Age), the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. Although this organization has its problems (technology and culture change in ways that are not as clear-cut as this organization implies), it does provide a useful framework for looking at the prehistory of Europe.Andronovo (Elena Kusmina).
