Middle America has been the focus of more sustained archaeological research than almost any other region on earth, and while all areas of Middle America are environmentally and culturally diverse, several distinct subregions are often identified as areas of archaeological specialization. From north to south these areas are Northern Mesoamerica, Highland Mesoamerica, Lowland Mesoamerica, and the Intermediate Area. Although this organization has its problems (the areas do not have clear boundaries), it does provide a useful framework for looking at the prehistory of Middle America.
