With that caveat in mind, the vast amount of research summarized in this volume has allowed a fairly clear picture of North American prehistory to emerge. There appear to be five discrete regions in this picture, each with a fairly distinct prehistory. These regions are the Eastern Woodlands, the Great Plains, the Southwest, the Plateau, and California. While there is great diversity (both cultural and environmental) in each of these regions and none of them has clear boundaries, this five "culture area" division
