This book could not have been written without the generous, enthusiastic assistance of many colleagues who have lent me every kind of support imaginable. I am indebted and grateful to each of them. Their contributions are everywhere in this book.
From the project's inception, I recognized two obvious points: the difficulty of adequately defining what initially seemed like an amorphous, if not indefinable, subject; and the need to make direct contact with as many as possible of the artists who make realistic work. My goal has been to deal with contemporary American realism inclusively, but without making its definition so broad as to be meaningless.
