The present book is an outgrowth of a course on "approximate and iterative methods in function space" that I gave during the 1960s at Northwestern University. The audience consisted of graduate students in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, operations research, and occasionally other engineering disciplines. The common elements of their mathematical training were substantial courses in advanced calculus and linear algebra. The course was developed to fit between standard courses in approximation theory, control theory, functional analysis, differential and integral equations, optimization theory, and numerical analysis, drawing its terminology and structures from functional analysis and its motivations, directions, and applications from the other areas. It was intended to provide sufficient material from functional analysis to support further study of most areas of applications that do not require the spectral theorem, and sufficient terminology and methodology to make accessible most books on functional analysis in normed spaces.
