Preface: The purpose of this book is briefly indicated in its title. It is, to compress within the minimum of space, time, and labor the essentials of French, necessary as preparation for reading. There is now a general consensus among teachers of whatever creed in favor of reducing the introductory work in grammar; and the multitude of helpful editions, now accessible in every style of literature, render elaborate introductory Readers no longer necessary. This little book attempts to combine the essentials of Grammar and of Reader, within the briefest compass.
