Schoenfeld Hermann (ed.). Bismarck' Speeches and Letters
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1905ю — 494 p.
Bismarck never accepted in his Chancery the official orthography introduced by Puttkamer, the Minister of Public Instruction, but adhered to his old lapidary style and spelling, which is not entirely uniform, and which had to be adapted to present school requirements, though in a few instances a concession was made to Bismarck’s peculiarity. The principal difficulty lay in the selection from the rich treasures where everything appears equally excellent in its classical simplicity. But the thread of the great events occurring is pursued, and for the benefit of American students and readers the gaps have been partially filled by running comments and a connecting narrative. As a profound knowledge of the sum total of European civilization and of all the branches of human endeavor auxiliary to statesmanship is tacitly implied in Bismarck’s literary productions, explanatory notes, in spite of necessary brevity, have swelled to a considerable bulk. Only the most general scientific treatment could be accorded to Bismarck’s classical language, which has remained heretofore well-nigh unexplored philologically.
