A huge collection of studies, many leading to the identification of the provenance of particular wares.
The initial intention of this book, which arose out of discussion with H.W. Catling in 1979, was to discuss the progress made in the rapidly advancing science-based research that had since the 1950s been attempting to relate pottery composition to provenance in Greece and Cyprus. Some of the background work for such a book having been completed at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology at Oxford in 1980, it became evident, however, that a review of much wider scope was called for which would cover most or all aspects of the application of scientific techniques to ceramics from Greek lands including Cyprus. The present review represents, therefore, a synthesis of this broader enquiry.
