Elsevier, 1968. — 387 p.No other language has given birth to abbreviations of its current scientific and technological terminology to the extent which modem Russian has and no other technical language is more saturated with acronyms.* For the non-Russian reader of Soviet scientific and technical literature these abbreviations need explanation and the present book provides a key to them. It contains the explanation in Russian, English and German of the majority of abbreviations and acronyms that occur in modem scientific Russian, both in speech and writing. Although it ia mainly intended for the scientist, the research worker, the engineer, the technologist, the translator and the librarian working with Russian literature, it also will be of help to any reader of Russian newspapers and magazines and for teachers and students of the Russian language. The approximately 7300 entries of this book-arranged according to the Russian alphabet--cover practically all important branches of modem science and techno­logy and some commerce terms are also included. Moreover it contains the most frequently used acronyms for Soviet universities and institutes of technology,
scientific research institutes, design and planning bureaus, factories, laboratories, industrial administrations, Soviet and international agencies, societies and organi­zations dealing􀁄 with scientific, technological and economic problems. Every abbreviation and acronym is followed by its full Russian equivalent and explanatory translation in English and German. To my knowledge this is the first book that deals with scientific Russian abbre­viations in such detail and layout. Extant collections do not cover scientific Russian and most of them have rather old or inexact technical information. As far as general Russian is concerned I have drawn upon "Slovar Sokrashcheniy Russkogo Yazyka"t. Furthermore various scientific and technological monographs, textbooks, encyclo­paedias, periodicals and dictionaries published in the USSR, Great Britain, the USA, East and West Germany have been taken into account. Listing them all would by far exceed the scope of this preface. Thia first edition may not be completely free from omissions and errors although every effort has been made to make the book as accurate and up-to-date as possible.
