Kirigin Branko, Marin Emilio. The Archaeological Guide to Central Dalmatia
Logos, 1989. — 308 p.
The idea for writing the »Guide to the Archaeological
Monuments of Dalmatia«, came about 'in 1976 as a result
of the fact that Dalmatia, until today, had no such guide, nor
could this type of guide be found anywhere in the world, even
though Dalmatia is rich with important archaeological sites,
monuments, museums and collections. It also has a very
long tradition of exploration and preservation. Guides for
individual monuments do exist (i.e. Diocletian's Palace in
Split), but as of yet, an archaeological guide for an entire
region in Yugoslavia does not exist. Therefore, some museums,
collections or perhaps a site (will be written about for
the first time in this book. The second important reason
which influenced the writing of this guide is the fact that
familiarization with this great wealth from our distant
history is actually unjustifiably deprived to most people;
mainly archaeologists. Art historians and historians know
about it, but the results of their research remained accessible
only to a small group of experts. In this way, archaeology
became isolated from wider social interest; this is
unacceptable with regards to the fact that archaeological
monuments are a basic part of the groundwork of the
culture of every nation.
