Council for British Archaeology, 1992. — 430 p. — (CBA Research Reports 84/Southampton Archaeology Monographs 5).
This is the fifth in a series of archaeological monographs, which was initiated by Southampton Archaeological Research Committee with the publication of a volume of disparate reports (Holdsworth 1980a) and a study of the pottery of Hamwic (Hodges 1981). The responsibility for maintaining an archaeological presence in Southampton has since passed to the Archaeology and Heritage Management Section (AHMS) of the Cultural Services department of Southampton City Council. The Section has published two other monographs; a report on the excavations at Southampton Castle (Oxley 1986) and a fresh study of the coins and pottery of Hamwic (Andrews 1988).
The volume contains reports on 73 sites investigated in and around the St Mary's area between 1946 and 1983: 37 of these having been archaeological excavations, and only one of them previously the subject of a detailed site report. It presents the first broad synthesis of the evidence to appear since the beginning of large and long-term excavations.
