he discussion of lithics and subsistence in this publication is based on two major chapters from my doctoral thesis on 'Aspects of the Prehistoric Archaeology of the Wear Valley, Co. Durham' submitted to Durham University in 1984. A major aim of this survey has been to bring to the fore the prehistoric archaeology of the Valley, and to encourage further fieldwork by groups and individuals in the area. The information contained here has been largely neglected in the past, and I am grateful to the editors of B.A.R. for giving me the opportunity of publishing the detailed inventory of sites and the lithic analysis which could probably not have been published elsewhere.
