A Visual Dictionary of Art deals with painting and sculpture only. The decorative arts are represented when they provide the sole source of our knowledge, as in the case of Ancient Near Eastern painted pottery, or when by its sheer quality the work can be regarded as 'fine' art, as with some medieval metalwork, or ceramic sculpture such as Bustelli's. Chinese and Islamic calligraphy have a place here because calligraphy is regarded as a fine art in both cultures. The same applies to Islamic bookbinding. Architecture is featured when it is a vehicle for sculpture.
